One Team, One Heartbeat

After watching another wild day of college football Saturday, I asked myself, "Why do college football players need to have their names on the back of their jerseys? And especially their home jerseys!" To me this is just tacky. Names on the back of the jerseys just detracts away from the whole "one team, one goal" concept. It is not about the individual player, but about the team as one unit coming together and winning. Skip Holtz, head coach of East Carolina University, backed up his reason for removing players names from the jerseys: "One of the players came to me and said that we have had the names on the back of the jerseys for awhile...I said that we have the important one (East Carolina) on the front, so I don't care about the one on the back." The university itself is more important than the popularity of the individual player, who, at most, will only contribute four years to a university's historic endeavors.

For the average fan, many do not know all 40-plus players on the football team, let alone the benchwarmers. But there is no need to know every player's name. That's why we pay the announcers the big bucks to tell us the name of every player that catches the ball or makes a game-saving tackle. Either at the game or on TV, the announcer will comment on the previous play, "Jahvid Best down to the 30 yard-line, Eddie Shoe with the tackle." Both the offensive and defensive player who made the biggest impact on the play are mentioned.

  1. I've actually never gotten that into football and I think the issue of ego is a big part of why. It's refreshing to see that's changing and even more refreshing to see somebody talking about that in a positive light.

  2. That's such an interesting facet of the college football franchise. Don't you want to know everything there is to know about number 24? What was life like for 24 before he was on the national map? What are 24's hopes and dreams?

I guess it doesn't matter who they are. I like this perspective.

  3. This is an interesting subject. I'm a big sports fan myself and i never thought of last names on players backs. That is a very good point about college teams and how they shouldn't have last names in the back because it is all about the college and not the players. On the other hand, how is the NFL draft going to be a success or even happen if fans, coaches or owners know the names of the players they get? Maybe just google "number 8" or something like that. All in all, good post and interesting subject.

  4. I don't really follow college football, but I casually follow the NFL. And I'd have to agree with you, I think it would be smarter to get rid of the names on jerseys. I think they have a better reason to put them on in the NFL, but college is like a different game (from what I hear), and it's much more team-oriented. In the NFL you have a lot of famous players with egos, playing for money, so I can see why it might make sense there. Nice post!
